need to clear up some stuff in my head!!!

Hi everyone

Hoping you can help me with something. I’m a student life coach but I’m really having some trouble with some “stuff” regarding life coaching, hope some of you will be willing to share your thoughts.

I’m hoping this post won’t be my last, in fact, I’m hoping your answers will create my next questions...

Can someone tell me what life coaching is??? And what does it do??? Does it make a difference in people’s lives or is it a somewhat benign process???

I’m really feeling overwhelmed, or perhaps it’s more disappointment with the whole concept of becoming a life coach. I got into this to empower people and to bring about lasting change in their lives. Am I in the right place????????????

PS How do I change my username?

I just don’t know what to do...

I have literally spent thousands on self-help books, CD’s and DVD’s, as well as, “doing” several self coaching courses. I want to be able to make similar changes in other people’s lives using the new skills I’ve learnt but there just seems like there’s too many rules stopping coaching from doing that (eg. Can’t give advice, the client already has all the answers, no counselling, etc.). If I’ve got it wrong please let me know!!! I only want to study life coaching if it really makes differences in peoples’ lives. I don’t want to market/sell a product that doesn’t work.

Very kind regards

Phil.

Hi Phil,

I'm a student coach nearing the completion of my studies and have met with many coaches over the past three years. Nearly every coach will have their own personal definition of coaching. I like the idea of it being about empowering others to achieve more and become more fulfilled.

A coach helps a client to develop personal goals and hold themselves accountable to their own plan of action. Bringing about lasting change in people's lives can be facilitated by the coach, however, the client must be ready, willing and able to be coached. Not everybody is, even if they are paying clients! http://www.q2do.com/Quotes/QuotesDisplay.aspx?QuoteCategoryID=15&QuoteSubCategoryID=122#3398

Changes can happen quickly, but it may take years of persistence. I haven't had any paying clients yet, but those I've worked with on a pro-bono basis have given great feedback. Here's one testimonial which helps me to know I'm on the right track ...

"Before I volunteered to be a client, I felt like my career was going nowhere and that I had become stuck in a rut. I am extremely satisfied with the outcome of the sessions and I now have a clear path with which to take and have developed a timetable of actions which I need to complete to achieve my goal, which I can now envisage and feel is attainable. I don't think this would have been possible without the help of Alex who has achieved in five short weeks what I have been trying to do for many months."

Coaching is effective and does change people's lives.

You don't have to give advice, leave the counselling to the counsellors, follow the process you've been taught, keep developing your own skills and you will be doing something of great value, something you can take pride in.

You need never be concerned that you're doing something that doesn't work, but you must always make your clients aware that results are not guaranteed, that success is dependent upon their actions, but that you are there to help them become more self-aware, and to challenge support and encourage them.

I hope you continue on your coaching journey Phil and get as much out of it as I have already.

Good Luck

Razz Thank you so very very much for your post.

Last night I had the worst sleep I’ve had in a long time!!! Your answer got me thinking "right" again. I to have been providing pro-bono coaching as part of my course, or at least trying to, but that’s where the frustration and subsequent doubt about life coaching started. I have approached pretty much all my family and friends for pro-bono clients, most said no while others said yes right up until they found out they actually had to do something. Of the couple that remained, none of them actually wanted change bad enough to actually do anything to bring about change. Although I’m thankful for their help with my studies, I can see now that they weren’t actually looking for coaching, I approached them, not the other way around. It’s not so much that coaching doesn’t work; it’s more that coaching works for those that are looking for something different in their lives and are prepared to do something about it other than just whinge. That’s the thing I couldn’t understand, why has coaching/self-help/personal development worked so well in my life but doesn’t seem to have any effect on those around me... answer, because I wanted to change my life and was prepared to do something about it!!!!

PS just wanted to add, I couldn't sleep because of good thoughts not bad ones... even thought of a couple of possible names for my business Very Happy Wink

Persistence pays! Coaching is a very gentle, hands off persistence though. You really do need to give others a damn good listening to! I've been through periods of doubt and believe it or not, I'm going through a period of doubt at the moment in terms of my future business. Yesterday though, I had another great session with a volunteer client. When I asked at the end "and was that useful to you?" I got back such an emphatic "Yes, very useful" that I know I have something to contribute. Now then ... making a living from paying clients after I qualify ... I'm being coached on that again tomorrow ... I've found coaching to be a very useful process!
